Knee or Hip Replacement Recovery at Home in Somerset & Morris County

Joint replacement recovery has changed considerably. Most patients now go home within a day or two of surgery, which means the most important weeks of rehabilitation happen at home. It makes sense for the therapy to happen there too.

The first two weeks: protect, then activate

Early work is about controlling swelling, protecting the surgical site, getting you walking safely with your device, and starting gentle range of motion. Doing this at home means we set up your route from bed to bathroom, check the height of the chair you will use most, and make sure your stairs are manageable on day one rather than day twenty.

Weeks two through six: motion and strength

This is where consistency pays off, especially after a knee replacement, where regaining full bend and full straightening early has a direct effect on your long-term result. A home session is a full session — no waiting for a table to open up, no sharing your therapist with three other patients.

Beyond six weeks: back to your life

Golf, gardening, travel, getting down on the floor with grandchildren. The endpoint of rehabilitation is your actual life, not a number on a chart. Later sessions focus on whatever you specifically want back, and telehealth check-ins with Remote Therapeutic Monitoring keep progress on track between in-person visits.

Why patients choose recovery at home

  • No driving while on pain medication or before your surgeon clears you

  • Practice happens on your own stairs and furniture, so the skills transfer immediately

  • Less exposure to illness during the early healing phase

  • A full one-on-one session with a licensed physical therapist every visit
